Our beloved brother Bruce Mccallum, of Newport, Maine passed peacefully at his home after a brief illness on Friday, February 3rd. Bruce was born in Bristol, Pennsylvania and later moved to Maine with family where he grew up. He graduated from Nokomis Regional High in 1978 and then went on to study at the University of Maine at Augusta. He worked for many years at Bangor Welding and Gas as the Specialty Gas and Fill Plant Manager.

Bruce was a self taught professional musician. He was a singer, songwriter, guitarist and performer. He played in many bands throughout his career, some of which were Freeway, The Limit, Northstar, Fonda’s X, Ice 9 and his most current band being eightysomething. Most notably he performed in the band Rokken along with his sister Carol, the lead singer. With Rokken, he toured the eastern United States opening for national acts and did some recording. He was affectionately known by his peers and his fans as “Trick” and “Bruce Almighty”. He constantly strove for perfection in his craft and was admired by many for his technical skills and his sound. The Portland Press Herald once named him as one of the best guitarists in Maine.

He was very proud of his Scottish heritage and cherished his trip to see his family, meeting most of them for the first time. He was an avid dog lover and a big supporter of many animal rescue foundations. He was a loving brother who will be sorely missed by many. He is survived by his brother John and Susan McCallum of Hampden, sister Carol and Doug of Plymouth, sister Susan and David Ross of Pittsfield, sister Rebecca and Steve Brewer of Virginia, sister Fiona and Mike Beane of Newport. Nieces and nephews: Ryan, Megan, Cameron, Rachel, Nick, Ian, Alyssa, Kylie, Sarah, Erin and Callum. He will be missed by the many cousins in Scotland, too numerous to name individually. Bruce was predeceased by his father William McCallum and Marion Murphy McCallum both from Scotland and Plymouth Maine.

There will be an open house celebration of life at the Barrows-Skidgell Legion Hall in Newport on Saturday, March 4 from 1-4. Please feel free to stop by and share a memory or story.
